Top 5 Shounen Anime

With tons of new shounen anime coming out soon like Boku no Hero Academia Season 5, Bleach and possibly Hunter X Hunter continuing, let's discuss the best shounen to come out so far!

Please note that this list is entirely relative to what I discern as a good shounen anime.

What makes a good shounen anime?

There have been hundreds of shounen anime to come out which means that there must be something that makes the anime in this list stand out within the giant sea of anime.

With any good anime, I look for good character development and this is evident in these anime. Without this, I cannot feel attached to the character as they grow as a character in this world.

Whilst this is important, I believe the most important aspects of a shounen anime would be the fight scenes and the power balance of the characters & how the anime handles the power levels of each character. With subpar anime fight scene graphics or significantly overpowered characters, the anime can feel dry and sometimes fails to create an attachment with the viewer.

Let's get to the Top 5 List of Best Shounen Anime!

5. Katekyoushi Hitman Reborn

With the insane character development from Sawada Tsunayoshi and partial bias with this anime being my favourite anime, Hitman Reborn takes 5th place! This anime feels good with the italian mafia storyline and with the side characters having the same character development as the main character, Hitman Reborn stands out among most shounen anime which have only the main character grow.

However, despite being an amazing anime, it is old and with most old anime, the graphics aren't too great despite the fantastic fight choreography!

4. Hunter X Hunter

Held by most as one of the greats in anime history, Hunter X Hunter takes 4th place on my list! Unlike Hitman Reborn, despite being an old anime, the graphics are ahead of it's time and the character progression of Gon, Killua and a other Hunters was mind blowing. It made me want to know more and more about these characters and watch them grow & learn about Nen.

However, the only reason why it isn't higher in this list is, as you might have expected, due to the unfortunate ending of the anime being sub-par and does not live up to the expectations that the anime created for itself.

3. Naruto & Naruto Shippuden

One of the greatest anime to grace this planet, Naruto and Naruto Shippuden has the best character development and martial arts fight choreography in this list. Following the main character as a child, to a teenager and finally as a father and leader of the Hidden Leaf Village. The only reason this anime did not go higher up in the list would only be because I believe that room should be given to newer anime that are still growing and developing to possibly be even better than Naruto.

One might argue that Boruto is that next journey for Naruto however, with the anime not living up to the expectations set out by the original Naruto series, I don't believe that it has a place on this list.

2. Boku No Hero Academia

Boku no Hero Academia has been a masterpiece so far in showing Deku's journey as a hero and growing to become the number one hero! The fight scenes have amazing graphics for a lot of the heroes and villains, not just the main cast. I am excited to see the progression of all of Class 1-A as they grow to become real heroes and their moralities possibly change during the course of the anime.

However, the reason why this anime hasn't placed in the number one spot is because I am expecting Boku No Hero Academia to be a long and enjoyful journey and for that reason, I will wait for this anime to develop even futher before I give it the credit it deserves.

Honourable Mentions

One Piece - Despite One Piece arguably being the best anime to ever release and having the best character development in anime, it is far too long for viewers to follow and can be intimidating for people to watch and keep up with.

Dragon Ball - Whilst being one of the classic shounen anime that everyone remembers, as a shounen anime, Dragon Ball

Kami No Tou - Being one of the most successful manhua to release and one of the first to translate over to anime successfully, Kami no Tou is definitely a series to watch out for. With the first season complete, I am excited to see how the anime plays out and whether it is faithful enough to the manhua source material.

1. Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer hit the anime world by storm with many loving the anime graphics and fight choreography shown already in the first 10 minutes of the anime. With loveable characters and excellent character development, this will definitely join the list of must-watch classics! With the manga complete, it's only a matter of time till we see the completed story for this fantastic show which shows that a shounen anime doesn't need 200+ episodes to deliver a masterpiece like Kimetsu no Yaiba has and will do.
